A PrimeKey presentation on how to effectively deploy and harness ePassport PKI to lower costs and prevent eMRTD forgery, is held by British-born Security Consultant Raoul D´Costa, at the ID India Expo 2012, 22-24 Feb, Pragati Maidan, New Delhi, India.
eMRTDs (or more commonly referred to as ePassports) are the only universally accepted documents for cross border travel. The introduction of chips in Passports has provided a requirement for new technology and infrastructure. The Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) infrastructure forms the core component of this eMRTD infrastructure.
PKI introduces a large amount of complexity in implementation, governance and security. It also provides powerful tools for both issuance and verification. The objective of this presentation is to illustrate some examples where PKI already implemented for ePassports can be effectively harnessed to lower the cost for issuance and verification of ePassports and ICAO compliant identity cards.
PrimeKey's presentation illustrates and compares various security controls present in eMRTDs along with their applications for cross border travel, banking, social security, health. We then present requirements and recommendations for the effective and secure use in a cross border scenario for both issuance and verification. We also provide some examples of high profile cases featuring eMRTD forgeries, and how these might be avoided through the effective deployment of PKI solutions.
