SignServer is an enterprise application that provides functionality for server side cryptographic document operations, used in environments where applications are not directly connected to a cryptographic device.
After receiveing a document (pdf, xml, ooxml, mrtd or odf) SignServer will either sign or verify the document and then return the signed copy, or the verifying results, back to the orderer.
SignServer can remove the complexity of digital signatures from the client and store the sensitive signature keys in secure hardware modules.
In situations where applications cannot or may not perform cryptographic operations themselves, they have to refer those operations to a specialized instance like SignServer. Such situations are typical for production line environments, where the requirements for the cryptographic operations are more complicated than just plain signing.
